Steers Holdings Limited

Following a visit to the United States in the 1950s, the late George Halamandres returned to South Africa to introduce the steakhouse concept to this country. A keen business sense also led Halamandres to introduce the concept of franchising to the South African market.

In the mid–1980s, the founder’s son, John Halamandres, joined forces with four cousins. Together, they grew the Steers Holdings Ltd group from a small number of Steers steakhouses, takeaway outlets and a sauce and spice production unit, to the country’s leading franchised fast food organisation.

The company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1994 and has matured from a single brand into a diversified group. In keeping with its core philosophy and history of innovation, Steers Holdings Ltd (now Famous Brands) acquired Debonairs Pizza in 1997. This acquisition has added immense value to the group’s stable of brands. A new market segment was entered in 1999 with the launch of the new fast-food fish and seafood concept, aptly named FishAways – meeting the group’s objective of being a key player in all sectors of the South African fast food industry.
